Description

Cliftons is a 16th century timber-framed and plastered house that was re-fronted in the late 18th century, during which two side wings were added, originally symmetrical. The building has two storeys and attics, with the side wings being one storey and attics. The main block features a four-window range, while each side wing has a one-window range, all fitted with three-light double-hung sash windows with glazing bars in cased frames. The attics in the side wings are illuminated by bulls-eye windows in the gables.

A slightly off-centre six-panel door is framed by a wood doorcase with plain Tuscan columns, a semi-circular fanlight, and an open pediment. The side wings also have six-panel doors with semi-circular fanlights. At the north end, there is a 17th-century wing that extends to the rear, creating an L-shaped plan. The roofs are slate, hipped on the main block and featuring two flat-headed dormers, while the rear wing has a tiled roof.

Notable architectural details include two fine Tudor red brick moulded chimney stacks: one with four circular ornamented shafts with spur caps on a moulded base, and the other with two circular shafts with moulded caps and bases. The interior boasts fine Jacobean features such as an overmantle, panelling, and doors, along with some late Georgian work.

Cliftons, along with Nos 13 to 15, Nos 17, 18, the Rose & Crown Public House, Nos 20, 22, Orchard House, and Nos 23 to 26, forms a group of listed buildings on the southeast side.
