Description
This description covers a late 18th century milestone and an early to mid 19th century milepost located on the south side of Rowley Hill (A1017), approximately 60 meters southeast of its junction with Church Walk.
The two waymarkers are positioned side by side within a small gravelled area bordered by concrete edging stones, which are not of special interest. The milestone is made of limestone and has a rectangular shape with a flat top. Its north face features a worn inscription that reads "HALSTEAD / 14."
The milepost is constructed from cast iron and has a triangular shape with a pointed central panel. This panel displays the inscription "COLCHESTER / 27 / Strurmere." The east face of the milepost shows the number 1, although the accompanying lettering for Haverhill is now missing. The west face of the milepost reads "HALSTED / 14."
