Description

Thorpe Lodge, also known as Hanging Hill Farmhouse, is a house dating from the mid-17th century, which was refronted in the early 19th century and has undergone 20th-century alterations. It is timber-framed and now rendered, with a plain tiled roof and a tall brick chimney stack at the rear. The house has two storeys and an attic in the gable end, with three windows to the front. The front elevation features three six-pane sash windows with horns, and a central penticed tiled porch with a 20th-century door. There is a plinth at the base of the building. The rear roof is a catslide roof. A Gibbs surround frames the front door. The interior retains the original timber frame with jowled posts, an original outshut, and chamfered spine beams with lambs tongue stops. A bedroom contains an original 17th-century curved brick chimneypiece. A 19th-century staircase connects the ground and first floors, and there is a stained glass panel depicting female figures in a garden with sunrays. The property was once known as Hanging Hill Farmhouse.
