Description

Nitrovit Limited is a maltings and maltings office built around 1700. It features red brick with blue header diaper work and has corrugated asbestos roofs. The builder may have been Colling of Witham. The building is two storeys high and consists of a double range with a kiln and office at the northeast end.

The southeast elevation has a four-window range, with ground floor windows that have segmental heads and blue header decoration, although some are now partly infilled. Above these are two-light timber louvres over later small pane metal windows. The building has a moulded brick plinth. The office elevation on the southeast has two similar first floor windows and a ground floor door. The northwest elevation displays a five-window range in an irregular pattern, with off-centre first floor loading doors. The ground floor features four windows and three doors, also arranged irregularly and with similar detailing to the southeast elevation.

Inside, the ground floor plan retains an original central wall that continues through to the second floor, featuring original ventilator arches. It includes original stop-chamfered tie beams and timber supporting columns, along with some notable 19th century fluted cast iron columns. The first floor has an original double range roof made of joggled framed and pegged side purlins, which are pegged at the ridge, and a centre tenoned top plate scarf with early wrought iron over straps.
