Description
The Red Lion Inn, located at 7 Newland Street, is a medieval timber-framed and plastered building dating back to 1841, featuring a crosswing at the south-west end. The gabled crossing was originally jettied but has since been underbuilt, and it showcases a late 14th-century frame. The main block was rebuilt in the 17th century, reusing a 16th-century frame. The upper storey displays exposed timber framing on the front. The inn has two storeys and attics, with a four-window range consisting of two-light casements with glazing bars on the first floor, and two three-light casements along with one three-light double-hung sash with glazing bars on the ground floor. The roof is tiled and was replaced in the 20th century, featuring a diagonally set chimney stack that has been rebuilt. The Red Lion Inn is part of a group with Nos 7 to 13 (odd) and Nos 29 to 33 (odd) and No 36, known as the George Inn.
