Description

The Whitehall Cinema began as a good brick house built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was later converted into a cinema in the 20th century and is now disused. The main front block retains original features above the cinema entrance at ground floor level. The front is now painted brick and features a parapet, a stucco cornice, and pilasters that extend through the two upper stories, framing the window ranges. There are five windows across the front, with double-hung sashes containing glazing bars in plain reveals. A two-story addition with two windows is located at the northeast end, and includes a 20th-century cafe on the ground floor. It is said that two original Venetian windows are concealed behind the cinema signage at ground floor level. The building is part of a wider group including numbers 2 to 12 (even), the stable to number 4, number 16 (Roslyn Home), the cinema itself, numbers 22 to 26 (even), a wall relating to the former house "The Grove", and number 3.
