Description
The War Memorial in Braintree was designed by Sir Charles Nicholson and completed in 1920, with additional plaques added after World War II. It is made of sandstone and features a bronze plaque. The memorial consists of a central cross with a tapered shaft and a Celtic wheel behind the arms. The arched plaque depicts a mounted soldier alongside a kneeling soldier holding a flag. It is inscribed with the words: "1914-1918/TO THE HONOUR OF/THE MEN OF WITHAM/WHO UNDER THE FLAG OF FREEDOM/FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ "Their name liveth for evermore".
On either side of the memorial, low walls in a quadrant plan curve forward, inscribed with the names of the deceased. These walls end in square-section piers topped with domed caps. Additionally, there are two flat tablets that list the names of those who died in World War II, which also conclude with similar piers.
