ALNE STATION ROAD (east side) The Maltings
II Maltings. c1860. Red brick, with Welsh slate roofs, with six chimney pots equally spaced along the northern ridge of these two ranges. Two storey. North west front has four shuttered openings on the ground floor, and five cross casement windows above, with to the right a single loading door reached up an external fight of steps and beyond a further blocked opening. To the left a boarded opening, and beyond a blocked window. The north east front has two gables and two openings in each on the upper floor. The south west front has a projecting square barley sweating kiln to the left, with a pyramidal hipped roof and ventilator cap. A single window to each exposed front, and deeply dentilated eaves. To the right three shuttered openings and above three cross casements. Above a slate hung dormer and a similar vent over the malt dressing area. Beyond to the right a lean-to later engine shed.
Interior: this malting contains all its original features, including its germinating floors, steeping tanks, storage bins, malt dressing areas and two square kilns with their original hearths and perforated drying floors. The added kiln also retains its original features.
