Description
53 and 55 Newland Street is a red brick house from the 18th century, featuring a parapet and a raised brick band. The building has three storeys and cellars, with a six-window range on the north-west front and a five-window range on the south-east garden front. The windows are double-hung sashes with single vertical glazing bars set in plain reveals. Number 55 includes a flat three-light bow window with glazing bars on the ground floor, while number 53 has a 20th-century shop window. There are two wooden doorcases with rectangular fanlights; number 53 has reeded pilasters and a cornice, and number 55 features a six-panel door with glazed upper panels, architraves, and a pediment. The roofs are tiled and hipped at the northern end. This building is part of a group that includes the Spread Eagle Hotel at number 47 and numbers 53 to 57, along with numbers 56, 58A, 58, and 60 to 66.
