Description
The Chestnuts is a house dating from around the 17th century that was remodeled in the early to mid-19th century and extended in 1934. It features a rough cast timber frame and a slate roof with gabled ends, which have shaped and pierced barged boards. The house has brick axial and gable end stacks and a two-room plan, with the eaves raised in the early to mid-19th century and a wing added to the north part of the right-hand (east) room in 1934.
The building is two storeys tall and has an almost symmetrical north elevation. On the ground floor, there is a large 19th-century six-pane sash window at the center, while the first floor has two light horizontally sliding sashes with glazing bars. The south entrance front features one and two light casements on the first floor, and on the ground floor, there is a two light casement and a four-pane sash window with a panelled door between them. Above the door is a verandah with a corrugated iron canopy and a fretted frieze supported by thin posts. The right side has projecting gable-ended wings added in 1934.
Inside, there are chamfered axial beams in both rooms of the original house. The timber framing for the wall-plate and tie beams is still visible, although the roof structure has been replaced.
