Description

The stone war memorial cross stands in the centre of the village at the junction of London Road and High Street. It takes the form of a foliate cross on top of a tapering square shaft which rises from a plinth on a two-stepped base. The lower part of the cross shaft carries the inscriptions:

(side one) TO/ THE GLORY OF/ GOD/ AND IN PIOUS MEMORY OF/ OUR FOWLMERE MEN/ (NAMES)/ WHO FELL IN BATTLE DURING THE/ GREAT WAR, 1914 - 1918/ HE THAT LOSETH THIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE SHALL FIND IT

(side two) TO/ THE GLORY OF/ GOD/ AND IN PIOUS MEMORY OF/ OUR FOWLMERE MEN/ 1914 - 1918/ (NAMES)

(side three) TO/ THE GLORY OF/ GOD/ AND IN PIOUS MEMORY OF/ OUR FOWLMERE MEN/ 1939 - 1945/ (NAMES)

There are eleven names of those who died in the First World War, and two of men who died in the Second; in 2000 one further name was added.
