Description
The West Overton War Memorial is located in the churchyard, directly opposite the Church of St Michael and All Angels, which is also a listed building, as well as the nearby Verger’s Cottage and Manor House, both of which are Grade II-listed. The memorial features a tall stone Latin cross that stands on a substantial rectangular plinth, which is set on a square single-stepped base. A sword is carved in relief on the north-west face of the cross.
The main inscription, which is incised on the north-west face of the plinth facing the church, reads: "IN LOVING AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF FYFIELD, LOCKERIDGE, AND OVERTON, WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 1939-1945 'IN SACRED SLEEP THEY REST. SAY NOT OF BRAVE MEN THAT THEY DIE.'" The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed on the side faces of the plinth, while the rear face includes an inscription for the names from 1939 to 1945, listing five names. All names are presented alphabetically, along with the rank and regiment or service of each individual.
