Description
Number 74, known as Verger's Cottage, and Number 75 are two cottages located at right angles to each other, dating from the 17th century and 1746. They are constructed from sarsen blocks that have been repaired and raised with brick, topped with a thatched roof. Number 75 includes an end bay extension of Verger's Cottage and a one-bay forward extension facing the road.
Verger's Cottage consists of three bays and is a single-storey building with an attic that was raised to two storeys in 1746, as indicated by a datestone, and part of the front has been rebuilt. It features a central boarded door with a thatched canopy, timber paned casement windows, and brick dentilled eaves. There is a rebuilt stack at the junction with the extension that is now part of Number 75, and a projecting oven at the rear. The gable end of the extension has been underbuilt in the 20th century, while above it shows an exposed timber framed truss and a half hipped roof. The property was awaiting renovation as of March 1986.
