Description
The Fowlmere School and School House were built in 1861, with alterations and extensions in 1913 and around 1930, by HE Kendall Jnr. The building is constructed of gault brick with stone dressings, and has an ornamental slate roof with stone-coped gables and brick ridge and rear stacks. It is designed in an Early Gothic style, comprising a school to the left and a school house to the right.
The front elevation has asymmetrical gables and a three-window range. It features 4-light stone mullion and transom windows with cusped upper lights to the left and centre, and a triple window to the house. There are paired windows above and a loophole window above other gables, incorporating a quatrefoil or trefoil design. Gothic arched porches with entrances are situated either side of the main left gable and to the right of the house gable, the latter featuring a plank door with ornamental ironwork. A triple window is located behind the house staircase. To the left end, a triple window is present, and to the right end of the house is a c.1930 canted bay with paired windows above. The rear elevation has a 4-light window to the main gable, a Gothic arched entrance to the right, a single-storey classroom block dating to c.1930, and other windows and doors serving both the school and the house, with a small single-storey addition to the house.
The interior of the main classrooms features open roofs with arched-braced trusses supported on corbels. A glazed dividing screen with folding doors, likely dating to 1913, is also present. The school house contains an open-well staircase with a stick balustrade, an original fireplace in the kitchen, and original doors, although presently covered with boarding.
The school retains its original fine detailing, with alterations made with care. A school hall extension built in 1957 to the left of the main school building and the c.1930 classroom block at the rear are considered to lack special architectural interest.
