Description
The King's Head Hotel, located at 1590 South Street, is a late 18th-century building that was altered in the early 19th century. It is two storeys high with dormers and was originally double-fronted with four windows. The hotel features a modern tiled roof and flat-topped dormers with cornices. The exterior is made of painted brick with a plain stucco band on the first floor and a fluted band below the small eaves cornice. The flush framed sash windows consist of three lights, although two have been reduced in size. The ground floor windows have simplified stucco voussoirs.
Number 1 has a notable mid-19th-century shopfront with pilasters supporting an entablature, a shop window with small panes and a panelled dado, and a shop doorway featuring arcaded fenestration and a fanlight. The doorway of Number 3 is topped with a bracketed hood. There is a carriageway at the south end with double panelled doors and a wrought iron signboard above the doorway. At the rear of Number 1, there is a half-timbered two-storey wing with painted brick nogging. The ground floor windows have margin lights, while the first floor features Yorkshire casements.
The King's Head Hotel is part of a group that includes Nos 1, 3, 11, 13, Smithy and Stables at the rear of Nos 15 and 17, and No 19, which collectively form a significant architectural ensemble with No 46 Market Street.
