Description

17 West Street is a house that has been converted into commercial premises, with an attached outbuilding. It dates from the 18th century, with an early 19th-century extension and 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of gault and red brick, partly whitewashed, and features an old tile Mansard roof with brick end stacks. It is a single storey with an attic. The house has two windows, likely from the 19th century, with 20th-century glazing, and a central part-glazed door. Above, there are two small 2-light dormers. There is a projecting stack on the left gable end and a small early 19th-century two-storey extension at the rear, which has a 2-light sliding sash window on the first floor, with a 20th-century door and window below. The rest of the rear has a catslide roof. The outbuilding, located to the right of the front, has a gable facing and features a carefully integrated Mansard roof. A garage door was inserted in the 20th century at the front, which also has an old loft door in the weatherboarded gable above, along with a door and small windows on the right side. Historically, this house was the tap-bar for an inn called The George, likely from the 18th century. After The George closed in the 1860s, it operated independently as the George Tap until the 1920s. These buildings, which have seen relatively few alterations, form a group with Burleigh House to the southwest and No. 23 West Street to the west.
