347/0/10026 HIGH STREET 20-JUN-07 War Memorial, St Mary's Churchyard
GV II First World War memorial. 1920. An Aberdeen granite obelisk surmounts a similar pedestal which itself stands on a Portland stone stepped base. The pedestal has an inscription and the names of the fallen. It is also inscribed with '1939-1945' and the names of the fallen of the Second World War. HISTORY: This war memorial was unveiled in July, 1920. It was originally dedicated to the village dead of the First World War, but was later also dedicated to the village dead of the Second World War.
SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE. This war memorial is finely detailed and is a good example of a memorial in the form of an obelisk. It also has group value with the nearby listed church. War memorials have a very strong historical and cultural significance on both a local and national scale. TL0900838186
