Description

The Parish Church of Saint Mary is a church built between 1847 and 1849 by Thomas Smith, who served as the County Surveyor of Bedfordshire from 1847 to 1855. The construction was funded through public subscription and the church underwent restoration in 1879. It is made of coursed ironstone blocks with ashlar dressings and features a 19th-century roof covering. The church includes a west tower, nave, south aisle, south porch, and chancel, all designed in a 15th-century style.

The west tower has three stages and an octagonal stair turret at the southeast angle, topped with embattled parapets. The bell-stage has windows with two cinquefoiled lights under flat heads, while the east elevation features a three-light pointed arched window. The nave and south aisle have a total of four windows in the nave and three in the south aisle, consisting of two and three cinquefoiled lights under depressed two-centred heads. Originally, the nave had a clerestory and both the nave and aisle were embattled. The south porch is gabled and has a pointed arched doorway. The chancel consists of a single bay with a pointed arched four-light east window, and the plain parapet has been removed.

Inside, the church is very plain, but there is a chapel in the south aisle that contains a re-used 16th-century screen with a carved leaf frieze.
