Description
Secondlodge Farmhouse is a house located approximately 800 metres north of Chicksands Priory. It dates from the early 17th century, with additions and alterations made in the 18th century and later. The building is constructed of timber framing with colourwashed roughcast render and has a clay tile roof. It is designed in an L-plan, featuring an 18th-century block within the angle to the north. The farmhouse has two storeys, while there are single-storey 19th-century outbuildings to the southwest.
On the north elevation, the earlier left-hand gable has a substantial external two-stage chimney stack made of coursed ironstone and limestone. To the right of the chimney, there is a two-storeyed gabled porch with a four-centred arch on the ground floor and a pointed-arched light on the first floor. The right-hand gable, added in the 18th century, has two casement windows on the ground floor and one casement window on the first floor, which features three leaded lights. The other elevations display a variety of windows, mostly casements, with some being leaded. The east elevation includes a projecting red brick two-stage chimney stack, with ogival brickwork at the top of the lower stage. There is also a 20th-century single-storey addition at the southeast angle.
Inside, a ground floor room retains a late 17th-century wall painting that depicts a unicorn, a lion, flowers, and the names Samuell Pryer and Elizabeth Pryer.
