Description
Nos. 14 and 15 Bedford Street are houses, with the ground floor currently in commercial use. No. 15 was formerly the Goat Inn. The houses date to the mid-18th century (No. 14) and late 18th century (No. 15), although they likely stand on the sites of earlier buildings. They have 20th-century tile roofs on slightly different levels. The buildings are arranged over two storeys and have attics, forming two distinct sections. Taller blocks project from the rear.
The right-hand part, No. 14, has a ground-floor sash window with glazing bars, set in reveals under a gauged brick flat arch. The first floor has two narrower, earlier sash windows with glazing bars, set in wide wooden frames that are almost flush with the wall. An attic dormer features a two-light casement window with glazing bars. A band of brick runs horizontally at first-floor level.
The left-hand part, No. 15, has a two-storey canted bay window to its left. Each floor of the bay has a broad window to the center and narrower windows to the sides, all sashes with glazing bars in reveals. To the right of the bay is a six-panel door topped by a rectangular fanlight, set in panelled reveals. The doorcase features elliptical engaged Tuscan columns supporting a moulded entablature. Above the door is a blind first-floor window. The attic has a hipped dormer containing a two-light casement window with glazing bars. This section has a moulded cornice topped by a plain brick parapet (partly rebuilt in the 20th century) and a moulded band above the ground-floor windows of the canted bay. A red brick ridge stack is visible.
