Description
The wall, gatepiers, and gates belonging to the Old Church of St Mary were built around 1830 by Edward Blore. They are made of ironstone with clunch dressings and are located on the west side of Bedford Street in Woburn. The structure runs approximately 45 metres long, adjoining the Lower School to the north and the Old Parsonage at the southern end.
On the left side, there is a gateway featuring four piers that create a central carriage entrance, flanked by two pedestrian gateways. The clunch piers are about 2 metres high and square in shape, with moulded bases, recessed panels that have cusped heads, moulded embattled cornices, and pyramidal caps. The cast iron gates are adorned with ornamental finials above the toprails and on the dograils of the lower sections. The churchyard wall is constructed of coursed ironstone with ashlar coping and stands about half a metre high. It appears that there were originally supporting piers and railings that matched the style of the gateway.
