Description

This is a Coade stone urn located approximately 10 metres south of the east end of the Sculpture Gallery in Woburn Park. It was likely made in the early 19th century. The urn stands about 2.5 metres tall in total and is set on a limestone plinth, with the base and stem of the urn made of stone, which appears to be a later replacement. The plinth features a moulded base and cap. The urn itself has a fluted base and a moulded flange at the stem. The base of the bowl is decorated with grotesque heads and acanthus leaves. The main part of the bowl depicts a scene of classical figures, topped by a frieze of vine with grapes. The out-turned rim has egg and dart moulding along the lip.
