Piers, Urns And Railings Along South And West Sides Of Private Garden To South Of Woburn Abbey

The piers, urns, and railings along the south and west sides of the private garden to the south of Woburn Abbey date from the early 19th century. They are constructed from red brick, limestone, and cast iron. The structure features 12 piers topped with urns, with cast iron railings in between, extending approximately 65 meters along the west side and about 50 meters along the south side. The southern section is positioned at the edge of a ha-ha and includes a central curved section that projects southwards. The rectangular piers have moulded bases and caps, while the small bulbous urns feature simply moulded bases, gadrooned out-turned lips, and ball-friezes adorned with swags and drops. The railings are made up of trelliswork panels with ornamental borders, and the entire structure rests on a stone-coped brick plinth.
