Description

The gates, railings, and four gate piers at Wykeham are likely from the early 19th century. The gates and railings are made of iron, while the gate piers are constructed from rusticated sandstone. Each gate pier is square in shape with bowed faces and stands approximately 3 meters high, featuring banded rustication. They have a continuous moulded impost band and roundels with rosettes on each face of the frieze. The piers also have a moulded cornice and flat caps that are carved with festoons in high relief, topped with fluted flat urns. These elements mark the former main entrance to Wykeham Abbey.
