Description

The Chinese Pavilion, located at the center of the maze in Woburn Park, is a Grade II* garden building constructed around 1833. It is designed in the style of a small Chinese temple, inspired by Sir William Chambers' 1757 work, "Designs of Chinese Buildings, Furniture, Dresses, Machines and Utensils." This single-storey, octagonal structure is built on a raised stone floor, which features an octagonal pattern made from two types of stone.

The pavilion is supported by eight columns with moulded bases, which hold up a pagoda-style roof. Fretwork panels are positioned below the eaves, connecting the columns, while balustrading made of fretwork panels is found between the columns on alternate sides. At the top of the roof, there is a central octagonal lantern, also adorned with fretwork sides and a canopied roof. Glass bells, alternating in red and blue, hang from each angle of the main roof and the lantern roof. The entire structure is decorated with painted designs, primarily in red, yellow, and green, with the ceiling's decoration mimicking bamboo work.
