Description
The West Block of the former Turvey Institute is a single-storey building constructed in 1847, as indicated by the datestone in Roman numerals on the northern gable end. The structure is made of coursed limestone rubble and features a concrete pantile roof. Its irregular plan includes a prominent four-light tall window on the northern gable end, which has stone mullions and a high-level transom, flanked by square-headed, blind lancets.
On the eastern elevation, there is a central stone chimney stack and a projecting two-stage gabled porch on the north-west elevation. This side also has a shallow projecting gabled wing with a tall five-light window. To the south of this wing, there is a small lean-to porch. The building is adorned with stone gable copings, moulded finials, and kneelers, as well as large two-stage buttresses at the corners and bay divisions. The West Block is included for its group value with other structures in the area.
