Description

Sale Green Cottage is an early 17th-century farmhouse, later adapted for residential use. It was restored in the mid-20th century. The building is timber-framed with painted brick and rendered infill, with some replacement brick walling and a plain tiled roof. The original plan comprised three bays aligned north/south. A large sandstone and brick chimney, with a brick ridge stack, was inserted between the central and southern bays. The cottage is single-storey with an attic, featuring half-dormers. The timber framing on the north end displays three large panels from the sill to the wall-plate, while elsewhere there are four smaller panels. The north gable end shows long straight braces and a collar and tie-beam truss with three struts to the collar and a central strut above. The west front has 20th-century casement windows; the ground floor has two three-light and one two-light windows. Three gabled half-dormers are also fitted with two-light casements. The main entrance is to the left, sheltered by a 20th-century gabled timber-framed porch and a glazed door. Inside, the central bay on the ground floor contains a large fireplace, stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and close-set studs dividing it from the north bay. A former external chimney at the north gable end has been reduced and now has a lean-to roof.
