Description

Hartle Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse, later used as a house, with alterations from the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. It is timber-framed with painted brick infill, set on a sandstone and brick plinth, and has painted brick additions; the roof is machine-tiled. The original two-bay structure is aligned north/south and features a lobby-entry plan, defined by a central chimney with a brick ridge stack. A small single-bay addition stands at the north end, and a larger 19th-century single-bay brick addition extends from the south end, complete with an end stack. Both additions follow the main roofline. The farmhouse is single-storey with an attic, and includes dormers. The timber framing consists of three panels from sill to wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners; no trusses are visible. The east front has a ground floor canted bay window with a hipped roof and leaded lights, and a 19th-century single-light window. Two gabled dormers, each with a two-light casement, and a skylight are also present. The central entrance is sheltered by a 20th-century gabled timber porch and has a half-glazed door. The 19th-century addition to the right features two 20th-century two-light casements on the ground floor, alongside a gabled dormer with a two-light casement. Attic lights can be seen in the right gable end. The interior retains stop-chamfered main ceiling beams, a large fireplace in the original north bay, and includes a 20th-century single-storey addition at the right end.
