Description

Royden House and No 17 is a house with a smaller house adjoining to the left. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone alterations and additions in the mid-19th century and mid-20th century. The building is constructed of brick, with roughcast on the right side, and features a plain tiled roof with gable-end parapets and stacks. It stands three storeys high and has a dentilled eaves cornice. The house has three bays; the openings in the outer bays on the ground and first floors have been altered, and the windows are from the 20th century. The ground floor has two tripartite sashes with plaster segmental heads, engaged columns, and moulded cornices. The outer bays on the first floor have simpler tripartite sashes, and there is a central 9-pane sash. The second floor features three 6-pane sashes. The central entrance retains its distyle Doric portico and has a half-glazed door with a moulded architrave and a transom light with Gothick traceried glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected. No 17, which adjoins the left gable end, is from the mid-19th century, made of brick with a machine-tiled roof, decorative ridge tiles, and a pair of stacks at the left end of the ridge. It is two storeys high and has a single bay, with a 3-light window on the first floor, a bay window, and a 4-panelled door with a transom light beneath a shallow hipped-roofed canopy supported by moulded posts. Despite the 20th-century alterations, including the removal of 19th-century bay windows, this house is included in the listing as it occupies a prominent site facing the southern approach to the village.
