Description
Whitehouse Farm Cottage is a late 16th-century farmhouse, altered and extended in the 17th and 18th centuries, and restored around 1980. It is constructed of timber frame with brick infill and has an old tile gabled roof. The original plan was rectangular, comprising two framed bays, with a further one-by-two bay extension to the south, and a pent roof stair turret to the west.
The cottage is two storeys with an attic and cellar. A prominent ridge chimney near the centre features a cornice, clay pots, and the carved date 1687. Windows are largely C19 and C20 casements. The east-facing front, overlooking the road, shows the timber frame. The left-hand gable features a two-light window on the first floor and a three-light window on the ground floor, while the right-hand gable has two two-light windows on the first floor and a three-light window and a two-light window on the ground floor. A small central section contains a two-light window above a C20 wooden door in a plain surround.
Inside, a good-quality C17 newel staircase leads to the attic. Much of the timber frame is exposed, along with a butt purlin roof. A large inglenook chimney is also present.
