Description

The lower garden terrace walls and steps at Moor Close, built in 1911 by Oliver Hill, are part of the larger garden at Moor Close. The structure features walls that enclose the terrace, constructed from red brick, York stone, clay tile slips, and pebbles. The layout is L-shaped, facing Moor Close on the southeast and northeast sides.

On the exterior, there is a brick retaining wall on the northeast side, which includes a balustrade with a semicircular pattern, although many pieces are missing. This section contains two opposed semicircular flights of stone steps with a grassed area in between. The lower flight consists of six and seven steps, separated by a circular landing made of tile slips edged with stone. The upper flight has six and two steps, also separated by a similar landing. Flanking the flight are two brick pillars with moulded stone bases and caps, each topped with stone figures of two children. The wall has a weathered top on either side of the pillars, retaining the terrace surrounding the house.

The wall extends southwest to form the northwest retaining wall of the lower terrace. In the center of this section, there is a rectangular flight of ten stone steps leading to the upper garden terrace, which is aligned with the principal axis of the garden leading to a bridge. To the left of these steps, the wall continues down the southwest side of the lower terrace. In the left-hand corner, there is a flight of six and three semicircular stone steps, featuring a circular landing of tile slips and pebbles edged with stone.
