Description

The pergola and court in the garden at Moor Close, including the enclosing walls and balustrades, were designed in 1911 by Oliver Hill. This feature is part of a larger garden at Moor Close. The structure is built from red brick, York stone, clay tile slips, and pebbles. The pergola consists of three bays supported by moulded brick piers on bases with projecting brick bands. Between the piers, there is large diagonal patterned trellis work, with the center bay left open. The pergola features very large oak lintels over the piers.

A low retaining wall faces the upper terrace, which has a weathered plinth and stone coping topped with semicircular balustrading, providing a central opening to the court. The court is bordered by a retaining wall on the south-east side. On the north-west side, there is a brick screen wall constructed in English bond with tile coping. At the end of the pergola, there is a moulded brick opening, and in the center section of the wall, there is a similar opening with a wrought-iron door flanked by two circular openings that have moulded brick surrounds and keystones. Both moulded brick openings lead to the forecourt.

Access to the court is provided by a flight of five and four rectangular stone steps, which are flanked at the lower level by two panelled brick piers with moulded stone bases and caps. To the left, a brick retaining wall in English bond with a weathered top connects the left-hand pier to the pergola court.
