Description
The cowhouse at Lower Farm, located about 12 yards west of Lower Farm Cottages, dates from around 1600 and has undergone alterations in the mid-19th century. The structure is built from a mix of coursed limestone rubble and timber framing, featuring rendered infill on a rubble base, with some sections of weatherboarding and brick replacement walling. It has an L-shaped plan, with the main section aligned east to west, likely comprising five bays, and a south-east wing of three bays. A chimney with a brick ridge stack is situated in the central bay of the south-east wing. The building has two levels.
On the main north elevation, there are three rows of panels extending from the sill to the wall-plate. The east side of the wing features one row of panels at eaves level and a short straight brace in the left upper corner. The main south elevation includes three stable doors, one of which has a cambered brick head, along with three loft openings. The west elevation of the south-east wing has two ground floor openings, one with a cambered head, and a ledged and battened door in the central bay. There is also a boarded loft opening in the west gable end of the main part. The interior is not accessible.
