Description
The cowhouse at Upper Bettws Farm dates from the 17th to early 18th century. It features a rubble ground floor and a lapboarded upper section, topped with a slate roof. The west side, which faces the farmyard, has four evenly spaced doorways and slit ventilators, with modern boarded doors. Similar doorways can be found at the rear. The uphill gable end has projecting stones that suggest there may have been outside steps leading to the loft, while the downhill gable end includes doveboxes and ledges. Originally, there was a lean-to at the rear.
Inside, the cowhouse has a five-bay layout, with the lofted uphill bay separated by a rubble wall and transverse feeding passages. The roof structure consists of A-frame trusses with queen struts and purlins. The uphill gable end is square panelled and timber framed. The building was restored in 1990.
