Description
The barn at Upper Bettws Farm dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and features a combination of stone and timber-frame construction with seven bays and two threshing bays. It has a slate roof that is hipped at the lower end, while the timber-frame sections are covered with modern lap-boarding on the outside. At the upper end of the west side, there is a tall gabled porch that projects out and has modern doors leading to the threshing floor. Smaller doors are located towards the lower end, which are taller on the west side. The barn includes slit ventilators positioned in the middle of the west side, at the stone base of the lower end on the east side, and at the uphill gable end where a central loft door is situated. There is also a lean-to on the east side.
Inside, the roof trusses consist of tie beams, queen struts, and overlapping purlins, supported by jowelled wall posts in the timber-framed section. The three bays beneath the main threshing floor have a sloping design, while the lower three bays are flat and lofted, separated by short transverse walls. Most of the timbers are lightly chamfered, and there is square panelling on the lower west side. The barn was restored in 1990.
