Description
Lower Wern y Pentre is a house dating from the medieval period, with significant alterations and additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of painted rubble stone with a stone tile roof and a stone end stack incorporating brickwork. A former central doorway has been blocked and replaced with a window. The windows are timber casements with exposed timber lintels. Attached to the house is a two-bay outbuilding with rubble walls and a corrugated iron roof. A small area has been divided to create a modern entrance hallway with a half-glazed door under a timber lintel.
The upper portions of four cruck trusses remain visible within the house, defining the two-bay hall and upper room of the original structure. It is believed a further bay existed at the lower end, which was demolished when the adjacent barn was constructed, with some of the roof timbers possibly being reused crucks from this lost section. One cruck truss is exposed within the barn and shows a “clean” finish on the barn side. The cruck trusses and purlins of the former hall and upper room display evidence of smoke blackening. An ornate cruck truss in the hall features chamfered arch bracing and decorative cusping above the collar, forming a quatrefoil and two trefoils. The other trusses include notched and halved collars and ties, along with remnants of substantial framing. Inside, there is an inserted stack, a large open fireplace with a timber lintel, exposed joists, chamfered beams with straight-cut stops, and stone flag floors. A small timber mullion window is located in the rear wall behind the stack.
