Description

The attached barn to Wern y Pentre is a two-storey structure built of painted rubble stone with a stone tile roof and a stone end stack topped with brick. The former central door has been blocked and replaced with a window. The windows throughout the building are 19th and 20th century timber casements set beneath exposed timber lintels. Next to the house is an outbuilding made of rubble with a corrugated iron roof, consisting of two bays. A small section has been partitioned to create an entrance hallway to the house, featuring a half-glazed modern door under a timber lintel.

Inside, the upper parts of four substantial cruck trusses remain, which define the two-bay hall and upper room of the original house. It is likely that there was an additional bay at the lower end, which was removed when the barn was constructed; some roof timbers from the barn may be reused crucks from this section. One cruck truss is visible in the barn and is unadorned on that side, while the cruck trusses and purlins from the former hall and upper room show signs of smoke blackening. The central truss in the hall is ornate, featuring chamfered arch-bracing and cusping above the collar that forms a quatrefoil and two trefoils. The other trusses have notched and halved collars and ties, along with portions of substantial infill framing. An inserted stack is present, along with a large open fireplace that has a timber lintel, exposed joists, and chamfered beams with straight-cut stops. The floors are made of stone flags, and there is a small timber mullion window in the rear wall behind the stack.
