SJ 22 NW OSWESTRY RURAL C.P. PENTRE-ISAF

4/203 Disused barn approx. - lOm north of Bryn Pentre Farmhouse - II

Long house, latterly used as barn/cowshed, now disused. C14, re-modelled C16 and C18 with later additions and alterations. Originally timber framed of cruck construction with outer walls now re-built in uncoursed limestone rubble, corrugated iron roof replacing thatch. Single-storey longhouse comprising 2-bay house part to right and 2 bays for byre; evidence for cross passage now lost. Early C20 windows to left, right and centre on south side with boarded doors to left and right. Interior: 2 true cruck trusses survive to house part, west with vertical struts from tie beam to cambered collar and Alcock Apex-type G62 and the other (former central truss) with chamfered arch-braced collar beam, King-post and curved struts; this truss also has slots for former trenched purlins (present roof pitch slightly raised) and shows extensive signs of smoke blackening; massive inserted stone stack between 2 trusses (now truncated below ridge) has chamfered wooden lintel on east side; stone partition wall between 2 bays of byre, which has inserted stack with chamfered lintel at south-west corner.
