Description

This is a disused barn located approximately 10 meters north of Bryn Pentre Farmhouse. The building is a longhouse that was originally constructed in the 14th century, later remodeled in the 16th and 18th centuries, with additional alterations made over time. It was originally timber framed using cruck construction, but the outer walls have since been rebuilt in uncoursed limestone rubble. The original thatched roof has been replaced with a corrugated iron roof.

The barn is a single-storey structure consisting of a 2-bay house section on the right and a 2-bay byre section. Evidence of a cross passage has been lost. On the south side, there are early 20th-century windows on the left, right, and center, along with boarded doors on either side.

Inside, two true cruck trusses remain in the house section. The western truss features vertical struts from the tie beam to a cambered collar and an Alcock Apex-type G62. The other truss, which was formerly central, has a chamfered arch-braced collar beam, a king-post, and curved struts. This truss also has slots for former trenched purlins, and there are extensive signs of smoke blackening. A massive inserted stone stack, truncated below the ridge, is located between the two trusses and has a chamfered wooden lintel on the east side. There is a stone partition wall between the two bays of the byre, which includes an inserted stack with a chamfered lintel at the southwest corner. Bryn Pentre Farmhouse is not included in this listing.
