Description
This is a barn located approximately 10 metres north of Pen-y-bryn. It dates from the late 17th century and was extended in the 18th century, with later additions and alterations. The barn is timber framed with red brick infill on an uncoursed gritstone rubble plinth that continues to the gable ends. The left bay has uncoursed gritstone rubble at the rear, while the front has been largely rebuilt in 19th-century red brick. The roof is made of corrugated iron and features crow-stepping at the gable ends. Originally a three-bay barn, it was extended by one bay to the left in the 18th century and has two levels.
The framing consists of two square panels from a high cill to the wall plate. There are eaves hatches located to the left, left of centre, and right, along with three doorways, one of which has a stable door.
Inside, the 17th-century section has a single-purlin roof. The left bay is separated from the 18th-century addition by a mixed stone and brick cross-wall, while the second and third bays are divided by a brick wall. There is a sharply elbowed cruck truss with a collar and tie beam and queen struts between the first and second bays. A loft has been inserted into the 18th-century addition. Pen-y-bryn, also known as Top House Farmhouse, is not included in this listing.
