Description

Ifton Hall Farmhouse is probably late 16th or early 17th century, with later additions and alterations. The exterior is roughcast, hiding a timber frame and revealing red brick additions; it has slate roofs. The farmhouse is arranged around a central baffle-entry hall range with two parallel gabled cross-wings set at right angles to the rear. It is one storey and attic in height, with two storeys to the rear ranges. Late 20th-century casement windows are present to the left and right of a central gabled porch. Ground-floor windows are in contemporary neo-Georgian bows, while those above are in timber-framed gabled half-dormers featuring moulded bressummers. A 20th-century plank door provides access. A large rendered ridge stack is located immediately to the left of the entrance, with integral lateral stacks to the left rear gable and an external lateral stack to the right rear gable. A gabled projection houses the staircase, positioned at the junction between the main range and the right rear gable. A 19th-century lean-to is attached to the left gable end.

The interior reveals a timber frame, largely renewed, throughout the ground floor, including square-panelled cross walls and wattle and daub infill to the right gable end of the hall range. Chamfered ceiling beams are also present. An open-well staircase features barley-sugar balusters, possibly partly 19th century, but with a 17th-century moulded handrail and a shallow pyramidal cap to the bottom newel post. The roof consists of collar and tie beams in two wide bays to the main range, and similar roofs in shorter bays to the rear gables.
