Description
Church Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of plum-coloured brick and timber framing with purple brick infill, and features a sandstone rubble plinth that is higher at the right gable end. The roofs are slate with coped verges on carved stone kneelers. The building has an L-plan layout at the front, with an additional range at right angles to the rear on the right side of the main range. It is one storey and has an attic, with a continuous first-floor band on the front and a band at the apex of the projecting two-storey gabled cross-wing. This cross-wing has 20th-century casements with 18th-century segmental heads on each floor. To the right of the main range, there is a three-light 20th-century casement with an 18th-century head and a 20th-century gabled dormer breaking the eaves directly above. A late 20th-century lean-to brick porch with a contemporary panelled door is located in the angle between the ranges. There are external end stacks to both the left and right. The rear range features timber framing with rectangular panels on the right side, which faces the farmyard, and has an external end stack.
Inside, the cross-wing has a chamfered cross beam and joists on the ground floor, with similar features in the right ground-floor room. Several internal walls are believed to be timber framed but were plastered over at the time of the resurvey in February 1987. There are several 18th-century panelled doors, including one at the entrance behind the porch. The 18th-century staircase features turned balusters and wide boarded oak floorboards on the first floor. The roof of the main range consists of two bays, with a visible tie beam at the center and part of a queen-strut truss visible behind plaster in the rear range. There is a cellar beneath the main range on the right side.
