Description

Plas Yolyn is a small country house located in Ellesmere, dating from the mid-18th century, possibly incorporating parts of an earlier building. It was extensively remodeled for William Challoner between around 1780 and 1800. The house is constructed of red brick with a sandstone ashlar facing on the front and features hipped slate roofs. It has two and three storeys, with a stone modillion eaves cornice and a parapet. The façade is arranged in a 1:3:1 bay pattern, with the central section slightly projecting and featuring an extra storey. The windows are glazing bar sashes, with tripartite windows in the outer bays.

The central entrance is highlighted by a small open-pedimented Roman Doric portico supported by two pairs of fluted columns, with guttae on the pediment. A contemporary half-glazed door with a rectangular overlight is located behind the portico. Red brick ridge stacks are positioned on either side of the central section, with external end stacks to the left and right. The left and right returns of the building have plain floor bands, with the left side featuring a dentilled band on the front part, and both sides have a toothed eaves cornice.

At the rear, the house has twin gables with a central valley and integral end stacks, along with coped verges supported by carved stone kneelers. There are also scattered 19th-century segmental-headed casements. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
