Description
Plas-yn-y-coed is a farmhouse located in Ellesmere Rural, likely built in the mid to late 17th century, with later additions and alterations. The building features rendered and painted brick, which may cover a timber frame, sitting on a sandstone rubble plinth, topped with a slate roof. It has a three-unit baffle-entry plan, with a short gabled range added to the front on the left side. The farmhouse is one storey with an attic, and it includes 19th-century segmental-headed casements on the right and right of centre, along with two 19th-century gabled eaves dormers. The gabled range has a 19th-century casement on each floor. There is a plank door located to the far left of the main range, positioned under the angled lean-to junction with the gabled range. A 19th-century red brick ridge stack is found on the right, while an external lateral stack is on the left of the short gabled range. Both the main range and the gabled range have single-purlin ends. A small 19th-century pink sandstone addition, which was formerly a granary, is attached to the left gable end of the main range.
Inside, there is a large stack directly in front of the entrance, featuring partly infilled inglenook fireplaces on each side. The room to the right of the stack has twin chamfered spine beams and joists. A cross wall in the right room is said to be timber framed beneath plaster and includes a plank door with pointed strap hinges. The roof trusses are believed to survive beneath plasterboard.
