Description

Barton's Bridge is a bridge dated 1819, likely designed by Thomas Telford. It is constructed from regularly coursed and dressed sandstone blocks. The bridge features a single tall round-headed arch supported by high battered abutments. The rusticated voussoirs extend through to the soffit, and there is a flat string-course along with a coped parapet, which originally had iron railings. The parapet terminates in rectangular corner piers. The datestone was not noted during the resurvey in February 1987. The bridge spans the Shell Brook, which marks the boundary with Wales.
