Description

Pentre-Uchaf is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the early 16th century, with remodels from the late 17th to early 18th century, and later additions and alterations. The building features part timber framing, which now has red brick infill, and is largely rebuilt in uncoursed limestone rubble. It has a slate roof with coped verges on the left gable end of the main range. The main range includes a short gabled range, which was formerly a granary, projecting at right angles to the rear, creating a T-plan. There is also a lower agricultural building, probably from the 19th century, attached to the right gable end of the main range.

The farmhouse is one storey with an attic and has one mid-19th century casement window with a gabled eaves dormer directly above it, positioned to the right of a roughly central half-glazed 20th-century door beneath a gabled wooden porch. The framing is exposed on the gable of the rear range, featuring a slightly cambered tie beam with vertical struts to the upper and lower collars, a blocked first-floor doorway, and a flight of steps beneath. A large integral stone stack is located on the back wall of the main range.

Inside, the main ground-floor room has a massive cross-beamed ceiling with deep chamfering and straight-cut stops, and heavy joists with various chamfer stops. The infilled fireplace on the back wall has a chamfered segmental-shaped wooden lintel. The late 17th-century straight-flight staircase turns at right angles on the first floor and features a carved bottom newel post with decoration similar to that found at Plas Pentre-Cefn, along with open vase-shaped balusters. A chamfered ceiling beam in the main bedroom has a bar stop.
