Description
This barn, located approximately 10 metres to the north-west of Coed-yr-hendre Farmhouse, dates from the 15th or 16th century, with alterations and additions likely made in the 17th and possibly the 18th century. It features a weatherboarded timber frame with a coursed limestone rubble plinth and walls on the south side, topped with a corrugated iron roof. The barn consists of five framed bays arranged in a north-south direction.
On the east front, there are two square pitching openings to the right, three boarded doors, and a pair of large 20th-century boarded wagon doors off-centre to the left. The gable ends have loft openings.
Inside, there are two full-cruck trusses on the south side, with the southern truss likely being the former end-truss, featuring a tie-beam and collars with holes for wattles on the undersides, as well as struts between. The northern truss is more altered, having a tie-beam and collar, along with evidence of former arched-bracing, indicated by mortices and peg-holes. Additionally, there are two tie-beam trusses to the north with raking queen struts, and a collar and tie-beam end truss to the south with queen struts and V-struts. The barn also contains pairs of stop-chamfered purlins and lofts in the centre and end bays.
