Description
This is a late 17th or early 18th century timber-framed barn, with later 19th, 20th, and 21st century additions and alterations. The barn is built on a rubble stone plinth and features small-framed timbering. Some sections have rendered infill, while the upper part of the barn retains older stave-and-withie infill. The exterior is now largely clad in 20th-century waney-edged clapboard, replacing an earlier thatched roof which itself was replaced with tiles. The roof is now covered with corrugated metal.
The barn is rectangular, aligned east-west, with double doors in the center of both side walls. Inside, a central threshing floor is flanked by storage bays with low walls supporting open frames connected by angled struts.
The interior has three bays, with trusses resting on jowled wall posts, ties, V-struts and angled braces. Angled struts connect wall posts to the underside of the ties. There are two ranks of staggered purlins and a ridge beam, with wind braces connecting the wall plate to the lower purlins. Many original common rafters remain. Horizontal wall beams include stick holes underneath and channels for securing wattle panels. The north gable end has a diagonal lattice of timbers, and mortice holes at the west end suggest it was originally similar, although it now has a central post, collar and angled braces, which may be original. Angled passing braces are present in the flank walls. A stone slab winnowing floor remains in the central bay. A hardboard loft floor, supported by pine rafters, was added in the late 20th or early 21st century.
