Description
The granary located south-west of Lower Smite Farmhouse dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and brick infill, with some areas weatherboarded, sitting on a high plinth made of brick, sandstone, and blue lias limestone rubble. The roof is plain tiled. The building consists of two framed bays and is a single storey with an attic, taking advantage of the steep slope to allow the base to be used, likely for cart storage.
The framing features three square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, with short straight braces in the upper corners. The gable ends have collar and tie-beam trusses with queen struts. On the south side elevation, there is a ledged and battened door. The east gable end has a wide doorway in the plinth, a rectangular opening on the ground floor, and a wood panel in the apex that includes two alighting ledges and five access holes for pigeons. Additionally, there is a two-light wood mullioned window in the ground floor of the west gable end.
Inside, the roof is supported by trenched single purlins and an intermediate tie-beam truss with queen struts. The ground floor and attic are plastered throughout, with the attic featuring a plastered ceiling at collar level. This building was previously listed as a dovecote.
