Description
SW 38 NE LIFTON
2/123 Granary with dovecot over about 30m - north west of Smallacombe Farmhouse
GV II*
Granary with dovecot over. Circa early C18. Flemish bond brick with bitumen-painted slate roof with low pitched gables at ends and to the front. 2 storeys with granary raised on 12 brick staddles and first floor dovecot. Symmetrical front with central entrance to granary reached by a probably C19 flight of stone steps replacing a timber ladder. 2 round-headed niches on front to right and left of door have brick arches. First floor entrance to dovecot below a later brick arch and rectangular recess. Bullseyes with brick voussoirs to either side of the entrance, 1 preserves its glazing bars. Pigeon entrance under a Diocletian lunette arch in the front gable with brick arches. Bullseye ventilation holes to left and right sides of dovecot, 1 retains an ornamental slate louvre. Some pigeon holes below ventilators. Interior Not inspected but said to contain 7 tiers of nest holes, 13 holes to each tier with unusual rear inter-communication (Copeland). An unusually grand building of its type and probably designed in conjunction with the rebuilding of the farmhouse. G.W. Copeland, T.D.A., vol. 75 (1943), pp. 267 - 272.
