Description

Black and White Cottage is a house dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. It is timber-framed, with painted brick and rendered infill panels, and has plain tiled roofs. The house has three framed bays running north-west to south-east, with a larger framed bay projecting from the north-west gable end. There are external chimneys at both gable ends; the north-west chimney has a detached stack and a probable lean-to bread oven, while the south-east chimney has had its stack removed.

The house is a single storey with an attic, and features a dormer. The timber framing consists of three panels from sill to wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners of the north-west bay. The roof structure includes collar and tie-beam trusses with struts. Most of the windows are 2-light casements.

The south-west front has two windows on the ground floor of the main part, along with a small 20th-century rectangular light and a window beneath the eaves, likely to a stair landing. A gabled dormer is to the left, and a ledged and battened door to the right. The projecting north-west bay has a ground-floor window, a lean-to 20th-century porch in the angle with the main house, and a 20th-century door. Attic lights are present in the gable ends. The interior has not been inspected. An outshut is located at the rear of the left side of the main house.
